For his diverse collection of sponsors, Lance Armstrong drove a green car (Nissan Leaf), drank diet beer (Anheuser-Busch) and made a few clever, pointed commercials (Nike.)
For the latter, Armstrong wasn’t the first controversial athlete the Swoosh-ladened company sponsored, and he likely won’t be the last.
When Armstrong’s Tour de France persona first became to blossom and drug accusations had been surfacing for a few year, he countered detractors head-on — and Nike did, too.
In this 30-second spot, Armstrong directs his anger toward those who asked, “What are you on?”
The commercial begins with Armstrong taking a blood test and with his voice: “This is my body and I do what I want with it.”
Armstrong also says:
“Everybody wants to know what I’m on. What am I on? I’m on my bike, bustin’ my ass six hours a day. What are you on?”
Wonder if Nike would like to destroy the spot now?
